My approach to event photography (weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs) is unobtrusive, flexible and responsive to each particular event; it delivers images that capture the spirit and flavor of a celebration. While I do take formal and posed group photographs, my emphasis is on candid or "photo-journalistic" images that capture spontaneous moments and expressions. This approach frees everyone involved, including the guests, to enjoy themselves and to celebrate without feeling that they are working for the photographer. It also enables me to create photographs that are a unique record of the event.
The pricing structure I use differs from that of traditional wedding photographers. While meeting with prospective clients, I determine precisely what coverage is needed based on their interests and priorities. Questions discussed at this time include whether I will shoot black and white in addition to color, whether formal pictures will be taken before or after the ceremony (if at all), whether a second photographer is needed, and many other important details. My fee for coverage of the event is tailored to the particular arrangements we make during that meeting. This fee includes a complete set of proof prints that my clients keep. I also offer the option of having the photos online on a password protected website.
After receiving the proofs, and at their convenience, my clients create their own package by selecting anything from a few reprints or enlargements to a set of beautifully crafted albums. I offer an extensive choice of sizes and types of albums and work closely with my clients to assist them in the production of their books. My clients are free to order whatever they want, whenever they want. There are no time limits and no minimum order requirements.

David Ottenstein has worked as a free-lance photographer in New Haven, CT since 1982 and is a member of the Professional Photographers of America. His wedding and bar/bat mitzvah photography has always been characterized by a candid, unobtrusive approach. David applies the same fundamental principle that governs much of his commercial and fine art photography: his careful observation and concise photographic coverage will provide a moving record of an event. David's commercial work includes architectural, product, editorial and people photography.
David's strong interest in American history and culture is reflected in his fine art/documentary work. This interest has led him to photograph interiors of decaying industrial buildings in the northeast U.S., to the Midwest, and more recently, to the mountains and Great Plains of the American West. Photographs from these projects are part of the Western Americana Collection at Yale University's Beinecke Library, the Permanent Collection of Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and part of numerous other institutional and private collections.
David grew up in the small Pennsylvania town of State College where, at 15 years old, he picked up a camera and was immediately hooked on photography. He received a degree from Yale University in 1982 in American Studies with a concentration in Photography.
